Stuart, Royalty for Commoners: The Complete Lineage of John of Gaunt, Son of Edward III, Kings of England, and Queen Philippa ) says 1055. But this won't work for me. It's makes his mother and father rather old in a harsh time, and he did accompany William the Conqueror to England.

He was recorded by William of Poitiers, he is the 11th of 20 men known with certainty to have fought with William the Conqueror on 14 October 1066 in the Battle of Hastings, England.   He was joined as "Ricardus de Benefacta," or Richard FitzGilbert de Clare, in the great office of Justiciary of England in 1073 in 6 William I.   Justiciar of England, 1073.  He was in arms with Richard FitzGilbert (de Clare) against the rebellious lords, Robert de Britolio, Earl of Hereford, and Ralph Waher, or Guader, Earl of Norfolk and Suffolk, in 1076.   Earl of Surrey, William II, England, after 26 September 1087.   He left a will in 1088; William of Warenne, when dying, made his two sons his heirs by the king's decree, William in England and Reynold in Flanders.

Much of the Royal Line information included in these family pages were found on the wonderful website of Mr. Robert Brian Stewart in Evans, GA.  I have spent many hours gleaning from his hard work. I would certainly be wrong not to mention his site.

I have checked many of the sources and found them to be true.
