Lord of Nottingham William Peverel the Elder was not the illegitimate son of William
the Conqueror (a claim appearing only in a late and untrustworthy source and should be rejected).
There is no direct evidence
of any relationship with Ranulph Peveral, but it is highly likely that they were related and possibly quite closely.He gave him custody of Nottingham Castle when it was built, and extensive possesions,
afterwards known as the honor of Peverel, in 1068.
He was a Norman, and
a major tenant-in-chief in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire
